Remodel Realities

Are you planning a complete bathroom makeover? Be prepared. If any of the work you plan to do requires you to turn off the water to your bathroom for extended period of time, make sure you have a second bathroom available to use during the remodel.

Bathroom Remodeling 101

A major bathroom remodel requires extensive planning. You need to make sure your daily routine isn’t completely upended, and you also need to be prepared to spend some money since a bathroom remodel can be pricey. According to Remodeling Magazine, there are a few levels to bathroom remodeling: mid-range remodeling is going to involve things like ceramic tiled floors and tub surround, a double sink and vanity, recessed medicine cabinet, wallpaper, and a new toilet. An upscale remodel, on the other hand, changes the bathroom itself; from expanding the walls, to adding a window, to changing fixtures, upscale remodeling is a major project. If you want a new, huge tile shower, custom countertops, a bidet, or other luxury items, an upscale bath remodel could be quite an expensive endeavor

Remodeling Magazine conducted a survey from 2010 to 2011 that showed the average national cost of a mid-range bathroom remodel at just over $16,000, with the associated resale investment at just 64%. These costs are geographically specific. Western states are the most expensive (over $19,000), but their return on investment is a higher 79.6%. Those in the upper Midwest states are close to the average when it comes to cost, but their return rate is considerably lower at around 55%. If you live in the south central states, you’re likely to get the best bath remodel value with a cost at just over $14,000 and a 70% return rate.

DIY or Professional Install?

If you’re a do-it-yourself type, you can probably handle some or all of your remodeling needs. But if you’re not interested in dealing with the hassle, you can always hire a contractor. If you choose to hire a professional, be sure to compare their part prices with what’s available online or in discount stores. And when it comes to demolishing your current bathroom, you might want to take a hammer to that yourself in order to save on labor costs.

Don’t Go It Alone

Even if you choose to do the remodel yourself, get advice from people you know who’ve done a bathroom remodel. Did they work with a contractor? If they know a good contractor, you can think about getting a quote from them too. Don’t know anyone who’s done a bathroom remodel lately? is able to give you quality information and honest recommendations on products, prices, and contractors in your area. All you have to do is fill out the above form and you’re on your way to updating your bathroom.

Understand the Size of Your Project

The size of the project will not only determine the cost factor, but the time and sacrifice. If you are looking to have a dramatic remodel, we advise to have a second bathroom at your disposal while the remodel is happening!

The Basics of Remodeling

Remodeling can be expensive, so knowing your budget is extremely important! Remodeling Magazine defines the degrees of remodeling as follows:

–    Mid-range Remodel: New toilet, a tub with tile surround, a solid-surface double sin and vanity, a recessed medicine cabinet, vinyl wallpaper and a ceramic tile floor.

–    Upscale Remodel: Expanding the room, adding a window, moving fixtures and replacing them with high-end models, an oversized title shower, stone countertops, upscale lighting, a bidget and other fancy amenities.

Costs and Returns

According to Remodeling Magazine’s 2019 data, the average cost nationally of a mid-range bath remodel is $20,420 with a return on investment at resale of $13,717, or 67.2 percent. Depending on where you live, the costs and returns vary widely. According to a 2010-2011 survey, the most expensive area is the Pacific Zone (California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Hawaii) at $19,490. However, this zone also has the highest return, at $15,514 or 79.6 percent. The upper Midwest is close to the national average on cost, but has a much lower rate of return, in the mid-50 percent range. The best value for a bath remodel is in the south central region, at a cost of $14,536 and a return of 70.5 percent.

Is Your Bathroom Remodel a DIY Project?

While do-it-yourself projects can be more cost-effective, it purely depends on your handyman skills and desired timeline. If you are limited on your remodeling skills or need the project done in a timely manner, hiring a professional may be the right choice for you! If you hire a contractor, compare their prices on material to what you can purchase online or at discount outlets. Also, consider doing the demolition phase of the project yourself to save on labor costs.

Ask Questions!

If this is your first project, don’t hesitate to pick the brains of those who have gone through the process before. Step away from your computer and speak to friends and family! If they hired a contractor, and were happy with the result, get a bid from that contractor. If you don’t know anyone personally, BathAndShower can provide you with information and recommendations on materials, fixture manufacturers, costs and reliable local contractors. To get started, simply fill out the form at the top of this page!

FREE Second Opinions on AC Repairs

Is a second opinion always necessary? Maybe not always, but we believe in the better safe than sorry philosophy. Watch out for these telltale signs that you should absolutely get a second opinion from another HVAC company before you start any repairs.

  • You get offered a deal that’s simply too good to be true. This is usually a sign that the HVAC contractor is either using low-quality parts and products or will surprise you with hidden costs once the job is done.
  • You’re working with an unlicensed HVAC contractor. Although they may have good intentions, unlicensed HVAC contractors may be lacking the skills and experience necessary to provide you with an accurate diagnosis.
  • You get pressured into paying for services ahead of time. This is a red flag that the HVAC contractor does not have your best interests in mind.
  • You get offered one-day-only special pricing and discount. You’ll never know whether this is a sales tactic or an honest discount if you don’t do your due diligence and double-check with another company.
  • The HVAC contractor doesn’t provide a “no hidden costs” quote. Anyone who is unwilling to guarantee no hidden costs will probably try to trick you into paying more. However, don’t confuse hidden costs with problems that may arise once the repairs get started.

If you are needing a second opinion, give us a call today, and let us re-diagnose your problem for FREE.
